On 23 December 2020, the inauguration ceremony for the Project for the Construction of Inclusive Sanitation Facilities at 12 Schools for Underprivileged Students in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu was held with Mr. ODAGAWA Hajime, Consul, Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai, Mr. N. K. Perumal, Founder and Chairperson, Rural Development Organisation, and students and teachers of the schools. The project was implemented by the Rural Development Organisation with a US$75,806 grant provided through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan.

This project equipped 13 schools (increased from the initial 12 due to a change in the plans) in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu with 117 Indian toilets, 11 accessible Western toilets, and 10 hand-washing facilities. These schools had difficulties such as having no or few usable toilets and facing a risk of infectious diseases due to the lack of hand-washing facilities.

As an essential infrastructure, the toilets and hand-washing facilities will improve sanitary conditions and learning environment for children, enhance girls’ access to education by facilitating their hygienic and safety needs, and help prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the schools and local communities. In addition, this project is expected to help strengthen bilateral relations between Japan and India.
