Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in FY 2018
Project for the Construction of a Care Centre for People Living with HIV/AIDS in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu
Inauguration Ceremony
2021/1/11

On 7 January 2021, Mr. ODAGAWA Hajime, Consul, Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai and Sister Leelamma Thomas Clarelet, the representative of the recipient organisation, Holy Queen’s Province of Congregation of the Mother of Carmel, inaugurated a care centre for people living with HIV/AIDS in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. The recipient organisation constructed the care centre with a US$79,978 grant provided through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Government of Japan.
The recipient organisation has been offering medical care and other support to HIV/AIDS patients since 2007 at its John Paul II Care Centre. In recent years, however, the Centre has faced a lack of bedrooms due to an increase in the number of patients.
In view of the above, this project supported the construction of a new building with eight bedrooms for patients and two bedrooms for nursing staff. It will help provide quality medical and emotional care to many more HIV/AIDS patients who are in poverty or homeless. In addition, this project is expected to further promote bilateral relations between Japan and India.
