On 27 June 2022, Mr. Taga Masayuki, Consul-General of Japan in Chennai, inaugurated Ritham Special School for children with special needs in Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu. The construction of the school was funded by the Government of Japan with a US$90,841 (6,557,811.79 Indian rupees) grant under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). This project was implemented by the Ritham Charitable Trust, a Rajapalayam-based NGO supporting physically and mentally challenged children.

Through this project, the Ritham Charitable Trust built a special school with 14 rooms including classrooms, vocational training rooms, and physiotherapy and speech therapy rooms, which will accommodate more than 130 students and ensure a safe and healthy learning environment.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. P.S. Kathiresan, Managing Trustee of Ritham Charitable Trust, said: “The major aim is to find the talents of these children hidden inside and provide them with needed facilities with all infrastructure and permanent building. The well-equipped and spacious school building donated by the Japanese people will help the intellectually and physically challenged children to learn a vocation to lead their livelihood in the society they live in.”

Consul-General Taga said in Tamil: “I hope that the learning experience here will help provide confidence, opportunities, and bright futures to the children who will begin a new academic year in this new building. Through this facility, I trust that Ritham will be able to bring a transformation in the region by empowering the children with special needs into self-reliant individuals.”

The Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai has been providing GGP grants to various grassroots projects in South India since 1990. In the past ten years (Fiscal Year 2011/12 to 2020/21), a total of US$1,739,803 was donated to 18 projects in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala.
