New Year Greetings 2022

2022/1/17
At the beginning of the year 2022, which marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India, I would like to extend my greetings to everyone.

Today, Japan and India, as ‘Special Strategic and Global Partner’, enjoy very close relations not only on various aspects of bilateral issues but also on regional and international issues. This relations was found formally 70 years ago when both countries established diplomatic relations. For Japan, after World War II, rejoining the international community was the priority of the national agenda. India supported Japan’s aspiration considering that honour and equality should be ensured for Japan and, as a result, India did not sign the multilateral San Francisco Peace Treaty and opted for concluding a bilateral peace treaty with Japan. Since then, a firm trust has been nurtured between our two countries.

Last year, the whole world has suffered from COVID-19. However, even in such a precarious situation, the cooperation built on the mutual trust between Japan and India has developed steadily.

Both our Prime Ministers held summit meetings four times including physical ones. Security cooperation between the two countries including joint exercises between Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Indian Navy has been progressing. In the field of economic cooperation and social infrastructure development, many projects including Chennai Metro, Outer Ring road of Hyderabad etc. are progressing successfully. Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) has added eight new projects including one in Hyderabad and one in Oragadam in Tamil Nadu, and the Memorandum of Cooperation regarding “Specified Skilled Workers” was signed.

This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and India, with the theme  “Building a future for our Centenary”, hoping that we together create our future beyond the 70th anniversary and towards the 100th anniversary landmark. I would like to work together with you all to make this year an opportunity to further strengthen the Japan-India relations.

Once again, I would like to extend my best wishes for 2022 to be a better and fruitful year for our two countries and for everyone.

January 2022
