NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese dolls (31st August - 22nd September)

Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai, Japan Foundation and ABK-AOTS Dosokai, Tamilnadu Centre supported by Government Museum, are organizing a Japanese Dolls Exhibition: “NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese dolls", from 31 August to 22 September 2024 at Contemporary Art Gallery, Government Museum, Pantheon Road, Egmore, Chennai 600008.
Inauguration: 5:00pm on 31st August by Consul-General Takahashi Muneo
Exhibition opens daily except fridays: 10:30am-6:30pm (Follows Government Museum official opening hours)
About 65 dolls will be displayed in this exhibition introducing fine examples of a variety of Japanese representative dolls. This exhibition explores the Japanese doll and its culture nurtured in the history and folklore of Japan with a focus on the "Ningyō to pray for children’s growth" used in the seasonal festivals; "Ningyō as fine art" for appreciation, which is characterized by various techniques, technologies, and styles; "Ningyō as folk art" that focus on local diversity and simple beauty; "Spread of Ningyō culture" that covers the diversity of dolls continuing to todays.
*Ningyō is a Japanese word which equals to “doll”, and literally means “human shape.”
