Mrs. Malathi Pandurang
The Government of Japan has announced the recipients of the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals on 29 April 2026. Among the distinguished awardees is Mrs. Malathi Pandurang, Director of Ikebana Sogetsu School, Chennai Branch, Tamil Nadu, India.
Mrs. Pandurang has been conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the promotion of Ikebana in India and enhancement of Japan-India friendship.
Since 1976, Mrs. Pandurang has been teaching and introducing Ikebana in Chennai and other parts of the country. Over the past half century, she has played a key role in promoting Japanese culture in India and fostering friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and India. In 2023, she was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Pandurang on this prestigious honour and expresses its deep appreciation for her decades of dedication to enhancing this Japanese art form.
Mrs. Pandurang will receive the Decoration and Decoration Diploma through the Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai at a later date.
